Real Nappies

Two babies wearing real nappies whilst playing

Many people still believe that the only alternative to disposable nappies are the old fashioned terry nappies – nothing could be further from the truth. Modern reusable or real nappies:

  • are easy to use
  • come in a variety of shapes and designs
  • are made of natural fabrics or quick-drying, man-made fabrics
  • have flushable or washable liners to catch any solid waste
  • fasten with velcro/applix, poppers or Nappi Nippas
  • can be washed on a 40°C cycle
  • can save parents up to £600 on the first baby alone and more for any subsequent babies. (This takes into account the costs used for electricity, washing powder and drying etc)

...and of course, they are better for the environment

Did you know that over 86,000 disposable nappies are thrown into landfill in Gloucestershire EVERY day? and in the UK, it's over 7 million disposable nappies thrown into landfill every single day!

Gloucestershire Real Nappy Project (GRNP)

Our aim is to provide Gloucestershire parents and expectant parents with real nappy information so that they can make an informed choice for themselves. Choosing to use real nappies (even on an occasional basis) reduces the number of disposable nappies going into landfill.

The GRNP is supported by Gloucestershire County Council and the Gloucestershire local authorities and is run by Resource Futures (who have been running the Real Nappy Projects in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and B&NES (Bath and North East Somerset) since 2001). The GRNP is working together with all the Gloucestershire Local Authorities to provide help and information on real nappies to all in Gloucestershire.

Our dedicated Real Nappy consultant Hettie Harris is working hard promoting real nappies throughout Gloucestershire.
