Dealing with real rubbish
This area of the website explains Gloucestershire County Council’s plan for dealing with real rubbish, technically known as ‘residual waste’.
Reducing, reusing and recycling our rubbish is a priority for Gloucestershire County Council. The council puts a huge emphasis on services and facilities that make it easier for local people to do their bit and we are seeing real benefits from this. We recycle over twice as much of rubbish compared to four years ago. But there is more to do to reach our target of 60 per cent in 2020.
Once we have reduced, reused and recycled as much of our rubbish as we can, the county council has a responsibility to deal with what is left over – the real rubbish.
Currently, we recycle over 40 per cent of our waste, with the remainder going to landfill. This creates harmful greenhouse gases that damage the environment. The government is imposing heavy penalties and taxes on rubbish that is sent to landfill. This means councils across the UK are looking to find more environmentally friendly and cost effective ways of dealing with rubbish.
